What is Delta-9?

What is Delta-9?

Delta-9 THC is a naturally occurring cannabinoid in hemp, so much so that it is what is traditionally referred to as "THC" when talking about a "THC-rich cannabis plant". Delta-9 THC-rich plants are harvested for both medical and recreational marijuana. You may note that we sell Delta-9 products to states where medical or recreational cannabis is not legal. That is because per the 2018 Farm Bill, any hemp-derived cannabinoid product with less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight is federally legal! That means we can ship THC products nationwide as long as they have the proper lab testing to show that they are under 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. In order to make these products we rely on the process of good ol' Synthetic Conversion to extract Delta-9 THC from federally legal industrial hemp.

Chemical Structure of Delta-9

What is Synthetic Conversion and is it Dangerous?

Yes. Synthetic conversion can be very dangerous if you are buying products from a company that does not provide you with verifiable Certificates of Analysis (COAs) complete with a solvent report. There are manufacturers that may use potentially unsafe chemicals to make Delta-9 THC through synthetic conversion, which is why we at Ethereal Gold Dispensary require complete third-party, verifiable COAs with solvent reports before we will even consider offering a product to you. Not only that, but we do our own batch spot testing to verify COA results. You can see these COAs under the "Lab Reports" section on each product.

However, solvents in products are not the only risk with synthetic conversion. You also need to have a full report of any containments, as some manufacturers will cut corners even more and mass produce in unsafe, uncontrolled, and unsanitary settings. The Ethereal Gold Standard for all products we carry both online and in our physical location is far beyond the bare minimum requirement at state level, which is just a potency test for a small portion of a batch of products.

Always get your COAs and work with trusted sellers when purchasing products.

Is Delta-9 Psychoactive and Will I Get High?

If you are considering Delta-9 vs THC you must remember that these are the same cannabinoid! In most cases if someone is referring to the THC level of a cannabis product they are actually talking about Delta-9 THC, Delta-9 THC is the same kind of THC you will find in a medical/recreational THC-rich cannabis plant. So yes, you can expect it will be psychoactive, and yes you can expect to get high.

The 2018 Farm Bill made hemp federally legal in the United states, as well as hemp derived cannabinoids that contain under 0.3% THC. Synthetic drugs are illegal, however with Delta-9 being a naturally occurring cannabinoid in hemp plants, this creates a gray area where synthetically creating this naturally occurring cannabinoid is not deemed as illegal. At this current date of 03/9/2023, Delta-9 is legal for purchase in all 50 states — However new restrictions state and county wide are being considered so please research your county or ask an Ethereal Gold Dispensary Handler for assistance if you have any questions before making a purchase.

Benefits of Delta-9

As with many cannabinoids, Delta-9 THC is being heavily studied for potential health benefits, as Healthline states:

"THC is used to help with the following:

  • pain
  • muscle spasticity
  • glaucoma
  • insomnia
  • low appetite
  • nausea
  • anxiety"

It is also a very popular belief that taking Delta-9 is a far healthier choice than drinking alcohol. An article by Adie Rae, PhD says:

  • "Long-term or regular alcohol use contributes to many chronic diseases and a shorter lifespan.
  • Although more research is needed, the risks of regular cannabis use appear to be lower than the risks of alcohol use.
  • Unlike alcohol, cannabis has important health and medical benefits."

Risks of Delta-9

Like alcohol, cannabis is not good for the developing brain. People who are under 21, pregnant, or breastfeeding should not use cannabis.

There are also a few common negative side effects that come with Delta-9:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Coordination problems
  • Dry mouth
  • Red eyes
  • Slower reaction times
  • Memory loss
  • Anxiety
