What is CBD?

You probably see signs all over your town advertising CBD products, and if you are here, it’s safe to assume you are wondering just what is CBD? Cannabidiol or CBD is a cannabinoid derived from Hemp Plants. It is one of many cannabinoids that exist within the Hemp plant, and has many positive effects.

CBD is found in many products in todays world and go way beyond the pack of gummy bears at your local gas station counter. CBD products are believed to be:

  • Great for skin, and many cosmetic brands have started their own CBD based lines,
  • Wonderous for pain relief and calming effects in topicals, inhalables, and edibles

But are these believed benefits real? Find out below.

What are the Benefits of CBD?

In general, studies have shown CBD assists with:

  • Offering stress resilience,
  • A sense of calm
  • Reducing inflammation and discomfort after exercise

Outside of those generalized benefits however, there are many benefits being studies and proven for CBD. In 2018 the FDA approved Epidiolex, a pharmaceutical containing CBD to treat two kinds of epilepsy. “The FDA approved the treatment for patients as young as two years old. Studies showed it was effective to reduce the frequency of seizures.” WebMD’s Robert Preidt reported.

Research has also shown that CBD has a positive effect on many anxiety disorders, generalized anxiety, seasonal affective disorder, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder — to name a few. Although these studies are still considered to be relatively new and more research is being done.

New studies are taking place for many other conditions as well “including Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia, diabetes, [and] multiple sclerosis,” says Brent A. Bauer M.D. as part of the Integrative Medicine Program at Mayo Clinic.

IS CBD Psychoactive and Will I Get High?

For starters, CBD will not cause a “high”. In addition, CBD is not a gateway drug and users cannot get addicted to it. The World Health Organization states, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

So, no, there is no need to worry about any euphoric, fuzzy, or traditional “high” feelings with CBD. There are absolutely no psychoactive components in pure CBD. It is important to note when you are trying products that not all CBD is equal and some could potentially be mixed with other Cannabinoids. (On Ethereal Gold Dispensary, you can find which products are not “full spectrum” by selecting the “Non-Detectable THC*” category. Even then, CBD with under 0.3% THC will still not cause psychoactive effects, but may show up on certain drug tests.)

Always be sure when trying a new product to read the label, read the Certificate of Analysis (CoA) to see that only the cannabinoids you are intending to take are included. Remember, if you’re uncertain about any of the products on Ethereal Gold Dispensary, you can click on the chat in the bottom right and one of our Handlers will be happy to answer any questions you may have. The Ethereal Gold Dispensary Standard for all products we carry both online and in our physical location is far beyond the bare minimum requirement at state level, which is just a potency test for a small portion of a batch of products.

The 2018 Farm Bill made hemp federally legal in the United states, as well as hemp derived cannabinoids that contain under 0.3% THC. At this current date of 03/28/2022, CBD is legal for purchase in 49 of the 50 states — Idaho being the only state with laws against its purchase.

Some counties have restrictions when it comes to buying/selling of CBD products, so make sure you are familiar with your county laws on any cannabinoid before you buy anything. Here at Ethereal Gold Dispensary our Handlers are always ready to help and we keep up-to-date articles on cannabinoids and their legality.

Risks of CBD

As previously stated, the medical field research surrounding CBD is ongoing, leaving many questions as to what the risks of taking CBD could be. Side effects of CBD may include nausea, fatigue, and irritability. CBD can also increase the level of blood thinning.

“People taking high doses of CBD may show abnormalities in liver related blood tests. Many non-prescription drugs, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), have this same effect. So, you should let your doctor know if you are regularly using CBD,” says Peter Grinspoon, MD of Harvard Medical School. You will note that all products at Ethereal Gold Dispensary have a “How to Take This Product Section”. We highly recommend reading it before taking any product. Additionally, it’s always worth talking to your medical professional if you have any concerns.
